The Background of the School
Scoil na gCeithre Máistrí was founded in 1990 by a group of parents who had sent their children to a local Naíonra and who wished to continue with their children’s primary education through Irish. The school acquired the old Marist Brothers School at the Hermitage, Retreat Road, as a building and opened with 40 children and 2 teachers. When we opened in 1990 we were the only Gaelscoil in the Midlands region.
Since then our school has grown and grown and currently has a staff of ten classroom teachers, seven special education teachers, four special needs assistant posts, a secretary and a caretaker. All Irish education in the midlands has equally grown in that period, at present Ballinasloe, Tullamore, Mullingar, Roscommon and Longford all have successful Gaelscoileanna.
In 2008, we relocated to our purpose built, state-of-the-art, sixteen classroom school building. Every possible facility to accelerate teaching and learning is available to us here, including a spacious and bright gym, two outdoor playgrounds, an astro turf, computer/library and research room and five special educational rooms. We now cater for over 280 pupils and this number continues to grow as more and more families opt to reap the benefits of an All-Irish education for their children in Athlone’s most modern school.
